    Doosan Babcock's CSR Report highlights its commitment to skills development

    Doosan Babcock today reveals that it has trained over 500 apprentices in the past six years as part of its commitment to help address the growing engineering skills gap in Britain.

    The announcement comes as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility report, which shows that 94 apprentices were recruited in 2014 alone. Bucking industry-wide trends, the company was successful in attracting three times more female engineering apprentices than the national engineering industry average and is participating in a range of local and national initiatives to help improve gender diversity in the sector.

    To support skills development more broadly, the company has now appointed over 200 of its employees as STEM Ambassadors. These Ambassadors attend schools, universities and events throughout the UK to promote STEM education and careers to younger generations.

    In addition to supporting the development of talented young engineers, the report reveals that Doosan Babcock:
    • Made significant strides towards its ambition of cutting carbon emissions by 20% from 2012 to 2020. The company has already surpassed a 16% reduction and is on target to achieve its goal. In addition, the company’s innovative product solutions have delivered carbon savings for customers of 15 million tonnes.
    • Met its goal of ensuring zero waste to landfill at its Renfrew facility and has now extended this ambition to achieving the same across all of its UK facilities in 2015.
    • One of only 68 businesses ever to achieve the British Safety Council Sword of Honour.
    • As part of the first global Doosan Day of Community Service (DDCS), almost 400 employees committed time, energy and resources to support ten communities in the UK, Germany and Poland. As a result of its success, the initiative has been extended to two events each year. Highlights from the first DDCS in 2014 include raising £10,000 for breast cancer research and donating time to support a local children’s hospice. Further achievements delivered through the first DDCS of 2015 include a partnership with Renfrewshire Food Bank, in which Doosan Babcock provided a new permanent headquarters for the organisation free of charge within a warehouse on their premises.

That’s why we are committed to working ever more sustainably and to identifying new ways to play a valuable role as part of the communities in which we operate.”
