In July 2006, I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and applied for Doosan Babcock's Graduate Programme. I chose Doosan Babcock because of the company's strong industrial heritage and the excellent reputation of their graduate scheme.

The Doosan Babcock two year graduate training programme is made up of a series of placements and my programme has been tailored for my personal development. Some of my placements have been based on industrial sites including a coal-fired power station and an oil refinery where I have worked as a planning engineer, a supervisor and helped to coordinate the distribution of materials. I have also been involved in the shutdowns of major units of an oil refinery, working alongside personnel from Doosan Babcock, the client and other contractors.

I have spent time in offices too, carrying out two design placements with the Engineering Department at Doosan Babcock's Crawley office and a placement at their Gateshead office where I learnt about the company's involvement in the Nuclear Energy sector. The wide variety of placements has given me a good understanding of Doosan Babcock's business and increased my knowledge and skills in engineering.

At Doosan Babcock you are able to take an overseas placement. I was fortunate enough to have a placement which took me to Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and France and gave me the chance to work on large international projects and experience different cultures. Doosan Babcock is a truly global organisation that undertakes projects across the world.

Doosan Babcock has been very supportive of my personal development and I have attended a number of courses whilst on the scheme to further develop my skills. Additionally I have been assigned a mentor who is there to help me achieve Chartered Engineer status with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. The work I have been involved in has enhanced the knowledge I gained at university and given me the opportunity to work with some very knowledgeable people, often experts in their fields. I have also attended some enjoyable functions like inductions and forums where I got the chance to meet other graduates on the scheme.

My time at Doosan Babcock to date has been very enjoyable but hard work. If you are keen to develop and pursue a career in management or a technical role then Doosan Babcock is an ideal place to be.
