I joined the graduate scheme at Doosan Babcock Energy in 2006 after graduating with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Sustainable Development, Energy and Management. I made the decision to join the Graduate Programme at Doosan Babcock as I was interested in a career in the energy sector which is expanding rapidly. I was keen to be a part of that growth so with its reputation as a world leader in its sector Doosan Babcock seemed like the best choice.
During my two years of graduate training I have gained experience in the mechanical design of both thermal and nuclear plants and in the process design of coal-fired boilers. I was able to transfer the knowledge I had developed as I moved to other areas of the business and became involved in other projects such as commissioning on site.
Although I have been able to increase my knowledge and skills within engineering design, one of the great things about being on this graduate scheme is that my placements have not been solely limited to engineering. I have been given the opportunity to experience the commercial side of the business with placements in procurement, QHSE, finance and project-management. This wide range of placements has given me a rounded view of the company and a solid base from which to continue my career development.
I believe that I have thrived on the varied nature of the placements, both engineering and commercial and have particularly enjoyed increasing my engineering knowledge, especially getting my hands dirty on site and working with experienced engineers, which to me is one of the best bits of the job.
I have gained many new friends who I have met at work, on training courses and at graduate social events. The graduate social scene at Doosan Babcock is increasing in strength as more and more graduates join the company.
If you decide to join Doosan Babcock as a graduate you will quickly notice that no two graduates' training here is the same as each graduate is able to tailor their placements to suit their own development needs and career aspirations. Through the mentoring system here, the company is supporting me as I strive to achieve Chartered status with the IMechE, something that all their graduates are strongly encouraged to do for their own personal development.
In the future I plan to move into Doosan Babcock's Nuclear Services business, initially to work on decommissioning projects at Sellafield and hopefully with any luck new-build projects in the not too distant future.

Prior to joining Doosan Babcock Energy I attended Loughborough University, and studied for an undergraduate BEng in Chemical Engineering. Once I had completed my studies at Loughborough, I decided to continue my studies by attending Surrey University where I achieved an MSc degree in Process Systems Engineering, graduating in 2006.
I was interested in pursuing a career with Doosan Babcock as the company's Graduate Programme had an excellent reputation, offering great career prospects - and that helps you achieve Chartered Engineer status. This really swung my decision, coupled with the fact that the company has a deep history and knowledge in the energy sector, knowledge that I was interested in gaining.
During my time on the two year graduate programme I will undertake a series of placements which will not only help me to develop my skills in process design, but also increase my general business knowledge, which is essential. What is fantastic though is that as a graduate engineer, my choice of which departments I would like to be placed in, which projects I would like to get involved with, and where I would like my career to go, really does count. Doosan Babcock view my input into the process as essential, in order to help me gain the competencies required for working towards Chartership status with the institute relevant to my discipline: The Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
Due to the sheer diversity of the organisation in relation to variety of disciplines, I have been given a number of opportunities that have provided me with a broad base of skills, which will help me immensely in my future career. For example, I have completed placements in the Quality department, the R&D; department, as well as the different sub-sections with our Engineering departments.
In addition to the wide variety of placements I have also attended numerous training courses such as the ECITB SMTD (Supervisory Management Training and Development) for which I will receive a professional management qualification once completed. Doosan Babcock views Continuous Professional Development as vital which is extremely important for me, as in the longer term this will benefit my own career development no end.
I have also been taken to a number of conferences, company inductions and seminars, on subjects such as Carbon Capture and Storage and coal lectures, as well as a number of company continual education talks, all of which keep you informed of current issues and scientific/ engineering research.
Joining Doosan Babcock is one of the best decisions I have ever made, as I am able to develop my skills and experience in my chosen area of engineering on extremely interesting projects which I love. Furthermore, the company is extremely diverse. As a result I have met people from all walks of life - this adds another dimension to everyday life at Doosan. At present I am currently involved in the Emissions Control section of the Process department and am enjoying every minute of it.
