Alasdair Fulton
I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde, graduating in 2006 with an MEng. I was initially attracted to Doosan Babcock because of the wide range of technologies, global opportunities and graduate training scheme accredited by the IMechE.
Since joining the company I have worked on a diverse range of projects, in both engineering and business, from 3D laser scanning in Hong Kong, to vibration and stress analysis in Eastern Europe. Mainly based near Glasgow I have assisted in developing business plans and marketing strategies, given presentations to our clients showcasing our newest technologies and looked at the future of carbon capture. In addition to this I spent 4 months at Ineos' Grangemouth petrochemical plant during a maintenance shutdown. As this was when I was in my first year on the training scheme I found that it was very quick way of learning a lot about site-based engineering.
There is also a good social scene among the graduates, with annual conferences, graduate forums and regular nights out organised amongst ourselves.
Now that I am nearing the end of my two year training programme, I am about to return to the Plant Integrity department where I will continue to develop my competencies as an Assistant Engineer with the aim of gaining chartership from the IMechE within the next two years with the help of my mentor.
I have greatly enjoyed my first two years with Doosan Babcock and have learned a great amount as a result of the well structured and yet flexible graduate scheme. This scheme allows each individual to gain the most benefit for their career and it rewards people who are forward thinking, those who put a little bit of extra thought into what they are working on. This can be seen very easily in the organisation as many of the senior management team were in fact previous graduates with the company themselves. I for one intend to follow in their foot steps.
