The win follows hot on the heels of Doosan Babcock’s multi-million pound framework contract for outage works at Drax, announced earlier this summer.
According to Neil McCallum, Vice President PC Boiler, Doosan Babcock, this latest contract was secured against stiff competition thanks to the company’s unique offering. “I’d like to think that the secret behind our success is twofold: Firstly we put forward a proposition that combined our experience as OEM for the boiler units at Drax with the expertise of Greens, the supplier of the original economisers back in the 1960s and 1970s.
“Secondly, thanks to our longstanding role as one of the main mechanical contractors at Drax Power Station, with an association that dates back several decades, we’re considered to be a safe pair of hands - regularly delivering a world-class safety performance, on-time project execution and excellent customer service.”
First opened in 1974, Drax Power Station is currently being transformed into a predominantly biomass-fuelled generator through burning sustainable biomass in place of coal. With a generating capacity of just under 4,000 megawatts the power station is the largest in the UK. In total, the plant provides around 7-8% of the United Kingdom's total electricity supply.
A key objective of the economiser replacement project is to improve boiler reliability, availability and efficiency.
